- [en] The diaphragm is a thin muscle that separates the thoracic cavity from the abdominal cavity. There are two lumbocostal arches on either side. It plays an important role in respiration. As the diaphragm contracts, it increases the volume of the thoracic cavity and facilitates inspiration. The diaphragm consists of three parts: a sternal part, a costal part, and a lumbar part. It has three large openings and several smaller ones. The aortic hiatus allows the passage of the aorta, the azygos vein and the thoracic duct. The easophageal hiatus permits the passage of the esophagus and the vagal trunks. Finally, the inferior vena cava and the right phrenic nerve run through the caval opening.
