[] This term was made obsolete because the word "promoter" is used ambiguously in the literature. It sometimes is used to refer specifically to the "core promoter" region recognized by the basal transcription machinery, and other times is used to refer to a larger regulatory region composed of the core promoter and also the regulatory region adjacent (proximal) to the core promoter. The core promoter proximal region is typically recognized by "regulatory transcription factors", such as Gal4 in S. cerevisiae.
